In case you missed it in theaters this past spring you can catch Ex Machina, one of the best films of 2015, streaming now on Amazon Prime. Written and directed by Alex Garland, Ex Machina is a science fiction story about the dangers of artificial intelligence. It has a very realistic feel to it in the sense that this movie feels as if it could take place in our world. It also excels at creating a dark and ominous mood throughout the picture making Ex Machina feel like a feature length version of the UK series Black Mirror or an updated version of Rod Serling’s classic show The Twilight Zone. This is an unusually intelligent film with great performances from its three lead actors, outstanding cinematography that creates a claustrophobic atmosphere the whole time with very minimalist sets, and a screenplay that focuses on ideas more than it does its characters or plot. You can read my review here or just check it out for yourself on Amazon Prime to see one of the most unconventional love stories and bleakest realistic science fiction films in recent years. Ex Machina still stands as one of the best movies of the year.
